Tour du Monde

VG: Nous avons pris le train "Chihuahua al Pacifico", de El Fuerte jusqu'a Creel, a travers differents canyons. Le train s'est arrete a El Divisadero d'ou l'on peut voir 3 canyons se rejoindre. Impressionant. On prenait des photos quand on a entendu le train siffler, il partait sans nous !!! Sachant qu'il n'y en a qu'un par jour, on a couru jusqu'a notre wagon dans lequel on a saute alors que le train etait deja en marche !!! A Creel on a fait une ballade en velo au milieu de rochers sculptes par l'erosion, en forme de champignons selon certains...! Ensuite la ville de Chihuahua: aucun interet. Nous y avons pris un bus pour passer la frontiere entre Ciudad Juarez et El Paso (Texas). Quel accueil a la frontiere! Il faut faire la queue, la faire de nouveau a un autre endroit pour avoir un papier (comme si on voulait emigrer aux US), payer quelques dollars, refaire la queue ou on etait au debut et puis realiser que le bus est parti sans nous ! Le lendemain, vol pour San Diego en Californie.
AC: The train ride from El Fuerte near the pacific coast up to Creel was just superb! You take the train through three canyons and up into the mountains passing wonderful scenery. We stopped in Creel to visit a little of the canyon surrounds, and to check out the mountains and lakes. Mexico trip was coming to a close, so we took a bus to Chihuahua and then up to the US border, crossing into El Paso, Texas! Encountered the usual 'over-the-top' border control, where you queue indefinitely ! Stayed just one night, (enough time to have a huge burger and fries!!) and next day flew to San Diego...

AC: After the ghost town of Real De Catorce, we stopped at a very cool city - Zacatecas. In Mexico's central northern highlands, the city high in altitude and has a lovely spanish colonial charm as well. We found a great hostel with magical views of the city! We lazed around here after the nightmare bus rides from Catorce. Enjoyed just checking out the city, including the cable car ride to take you to La Bufa to get amazing views of the town and surrounding areas. Tried their famous Zacatecas "Gorditas" as well... like a little pita bread filled with anything and everything!!
VG:Une autre jolie ville coloniale, Zacatecas. Quelques jours relax dans un hotel tres sympa avec une terasse et de la tequilla !

VG: Real de 14 est une "ville fantôme": elle s'est tres rapidement developpee suite a la decouverte de mines d'argent et puis elle a ete abandonnee il y a une centaine d'annees... pour y acceder on doit traverser un etroit tunnel de 2 kilometres, dans l'obscurite et dans un petit bus prevu pour 25 personnes mais on etait au moins 50...!
AC: An abandoned silver mining town in the Mexican central highlands (2750m) reached only after several dodgy bus rides and a final claustrophobic 2km trip through a tunnel big enough for only one little shuttle bus at a time (and as usual crammed with more people than it should have had!) The town itself has an eerie feeling of once thriving little mining town, now only just coming back to life. Really enjoyed the walks in the mountains surrounding the village and we were able to get some really spectacular views of the town from high.

VG: Guanajuato, ville coloniale avec ses maisons de toutes les couleurs, grimpant sur les collines ! Nous sommes arrives le 31 octobre expres, pour los Dias de Muertos. Ici aussi, des squelettes (en papier, carton, plastique, chocolat, gateaux, sucettes etc...) partout. Et le jour venu, le 1er Novembre au soir, nous sommes alles au cimetierre comme conseille par d'autres voyageurs! C'etait plein de monde qui amenait des fleurs, des bougies... Mais c'etait pas vraiment la fete, les gens avaient plutot l'air tristes et on s'est sentis vraiment nuls d'etre la au milieu d'eux, comme des touristes voyeurs... Le lendemain nous sommes alles visiter l'attraction numero 1 de Guanajuato: le musee des momies. Tiens, des momies Azteques ? Non, pas du tout...en fait une fois dedans, on nous a explique que lorsque les familles ne paient plus le cimetierre pour garder les defunts, ils sont exhumes, et...environ une fois sur 100 il s'agit d'une momie (grace a l'air sec). Et dans ce cas la, on envoie tout au musee ! Mmmmmh, je ne me suis pas sentie tres bien honnetement! On a vu la plus petite momie du monde parait-il! C'est la fierte de la ville d'ailleurs, elle est sur toutes les cartes postales! (NB: sur la derniere photo a droite sur le mur, c'est ecrit "Pipila", nom du site qui surplombe la ville!). Ensuite nous sommes alles a San Miguel de Allende, repaire de gringos (=Americains) retraites. On n'a pas ete emballes, meme si la ville est quand meme jolie.

AC: We visited a very quaint and picturesque colonial city of Guanajuato. A fantastic village high in the hills, with Spanish architecture and influences. The view from our hostel roof top was stunning! We enjoyed a nice break of 3 days here, just chilling in the city's squares and little cobble stoned streets. We were also here during the La Dia De Muertos festival, where Mexicans celebrate those who have passed away. It was fantastic to se all the cakes, the decorations and excitement around the city. We went to the cemetary on the night of the festival where families take food and visit their relatives graves to enjoy a meal with them! It was kind of spooky and, as we didn't want to 'intrude' on their ceremonies, we just hovered around for a little while and then slipped away quietly. There is also a Museum of Mummys here!! Quite freakish to see! Apparently the dry air here helps bodies to NOT decay too much, and if families can't pay to keep dead family in the cemetary, they exhume the bodies, and, the best ones go on display in the museum! They even have the smallest mummy in the world on display, a little tiny baby! Yes, this country is fascinated with death! We also spent a couple of days in San Miguel de Allende (another colonial city) nearby. Nice place, lots of retired Americans and for me, not as nice as Guanajuato.
